IntroductionUniversity of Maryland I am pleased to announce thatthis and the next issue of Evaluation & the Health Professions are devoted to what may be the most important methodological innovation developed during the last half of this century. I would like to dedicate these issues to Gene V Glass, who galvanized the research community with (a) his 1976 article entitled "Primary, Secondary, and Meta-Analysis of Research, " (b) the publication of two extremely influential metaanalyses (Glass & Smith, 1979; Smith & Glass, 1977) demonstrating definitive effects for two of the most important (and controversial) variables in the fields of psychology and education (i.e., psychotherapy and class size, respectively), and (c) his seminal text in the area published by Sage (Glass, McGaw, & Smith, 1981)-all of which occurred in a span of less than 5 years. No one can predict the future, but Ifirmly believe that Gene V Glass will be awarded a prominent place in the history of science for introducing andfostering the growth of this very powerful means of synthesizing knowledge.
