The Administrator and Faculty Evaluation

A Delicate Balance

Concern for accountability in higher education is not new Administrators are periodically faced with the need to design and implement mechanisms for evaluating the myriad aspects of instructional pro gram delivery One aspect that frequently evokes emotional and defensive behavior is that of faculy evaluatron. Faculty need to become aware of the critical issues which face administrators and are linked to faculty evaluation, namely, finance, governance, accountability, flexibility, and goals. The role of the administrator in educating the faculty does not end with a heightened appreciation of the publics to be served. The administrator must also be aware of evaluative research as a groundwork in facilitating faculty involvement in the development and implementation of a faculty evaluation system.
